The recently established Centre for Quantum Engineering and Space-Time Research (QUEST) concentrates an outstanding amount of expertise in all aspects of cold atoms, quantum optics and space time research at the University of Hanover. The institute of quantum optics (IQ) has expertise in quantum de-generate fermionic and bosonic gases, ultra cold molecules, atom interferometry, atom clocks, optical frequency standarts, dipole traps, atom lasers, atom chips, optical lattices, bloch oscillations and microgravity research with ultra cold atoms in highly compact and transportable setups. It coordinated the STREP on „Future Inertial Atomic Quantum Sensors“ based on freely falling atoms as well as the currently running ESA/Eurocores project „Inertial Quantum Sensors“, an interdisciplinary network on earth observation with atomic sensors. The IQ initiated the QUANTUS project, a large project for atom interferometry in the extended free fall in microgravity.
